With the development and entry into force of the United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement in 1995, the international community made a commitment to strengthen Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), established to deal with the management of shared high seas resources.

We will be holding an ICES-sponsored symposium in April 09 that will bring
together deepwater biologists, engineers, technicians, and policy makers to
identify information gaps and forge collaborative partnerships. I encourage you

NEAFC and the OSPAR Commission have delivered a breakthrough initiative by announcing plans to promote mutual cooperation towards the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the North-East Atlantic.
The 27th session of the Committee on Fisheries of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, took place between 5 - 9 March 2007 at FAO Headquarters in Rome. One of the agenda items was " Strengthening Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs) and their performances". This calls for all RFMOs to undertake performance reviews.
Applications are invited for the post of Head of Advisory Services of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The post, which will become vacant in 2010, is based at the Council’s headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. ICES, the world’s oldest intergovernmental scientific organisation, promotes and co‐ordinates marine research on marine ecosystems including living marine resources, publishes the results of this research, and provides science based advisory services for the management of human activities that impact marine ecosystems.
